Where to Stay in Ibiza — Choose the Drive, Then the Bed
Ibiza is roughly 45 kilometres end to end and visitors consistently underestimate it. Sant Antoni to Santa Eulària is a real 40 minutes. The north is an hour from the airport. That is not far in absolute terms, but you will make the journey twice a day and once of those at four in the morning.
So choose your base by the drives it commits you to, not by the photographs. Everything else about an Ibiza week is fixable; the geography is not.
The Drive Is the Whole Decision
Ask two questions. Where will you be at nine in the evening, and where will you be at four in the morning? If the answers are more than twenty minutes apart, you need a car and a driver, and that is a cost and a constraint rather than a detail.
The second thing to know is that taxis run out in July and August. Not are slow — run out. There is no reliable way to hail one at closing time, so an area that depends on taxis after midnight is an area that will strand you at least once.
That single fact sorts the island into two groups: places you can walk home from, and places where transport has to be arranged in advance.
The Southern Strip: Nearest to Everything Loud
Playa d'en Bossa is ten minutes from the airport and music is playing by lunchtime. Ushuaïa runs open-air through the afternoon and finishes early, with the crowd crossing to Hï Ibiza opposite until six, so the entire day-to-dawn arc happens on foot.
That is the strongest argument for it and it is a good one. The counter-argument is that it never stops. Hotels back onto a strip with sound until dawn, and if you want a quiet Thursday you will have to drive to find one.
Best for a short trip built around nightlife, for a first visit, and for anyone who does not want to think about transport at all.
Ibiza Town and Talamanca: The Sensible Middle
Ibiza Town is the most flexible base on the island. Pacha is beside the marina, the port and Dalt Vila are walkable, the restaurants are the island's best concentration, and the airport is fifteen minutes. Streets in the old town are steep, narrow and noisy in August, which is the trade.
Talamanca is the same convenience with the volume turned down: a sheltered bay ten minutes round the water, calm at night, and close to the marinas at Botafoch and Ibiza Magna if any of your days start on a boat.
If you are unsure, pick one of these two. They cost you nothing in access and they suit almost every kind of trip.
The West and the East
Sant Antoni faces west, which is why the sunset strip is there. Cheaper, younger, its own nightlife circuit, and genuinely far from the other side of the island — treat it as somewhere you stay rather than somewhere you commute from.
Santa Eulària on the east coast is the calm option that still has a town attached: a promenade, real restaurants, families, and about twenty-five minutes into Ibiza Town. It is the base most people should consider and few do.
The southwest around Sant Josep and Cala Jondal is beach-led and short on dinner options once you leave the beach clubs, so plan on driving in the evening. What it does have is the coast road and the cliffs above Cala d'Hort looking out at Es Vedrà.
The North: Only If You Mean It
Sant Joan, Sant Miquel, Santa Gertrudis, Sant Llorenç, Portinatx, the cliffs at Na Xamena — pine, red earth, silence, and the best fincas on the island. Also an hour from the airport, no streetlights, and roads you will not enjoy learning in the dark.
Stay here if the trip is slow: long lunches, a couple of dinners, Benirràs on a Sunday evening for the drums at sunset, and no intention of being in a club at four. It is the better Ibiza and it is not compatible with a nightlife week.
