Very few people eat badly in Ibiza because they chose the wrong restaurant. They eat badly because they booked a table forty minutes from where they were sleeping, at eight in the evening, in a room that charges for the sea rather than the cooking. Fix those three things and almost anywhere on this island will feed you properly.
Distance Decides More Than the Menu
The island is roughly 45 kilometres from end to end and the north is a genuine hour from the airport. Dinner at Santa Eulària while you are sleeping at Sant Antoni is a round trip of well over an hour, and in July and August there will be no cab waiting when you stand up from the table. Either choose somewhere within twenty minutes of your bed, or accept that you are paying a driver to sit outside.
Once you apply that rule, the map does the shortlisting for you. Around the port, Ibiza Town holds more good tables inside a ten-minute walk than the rest of the island manages in total, and you can climb through Dalt Vila before you sit down. On the south coast near Cala Jondal you have Blue Marlin for lunch and Es Torrent a short drive west, on a cove small enough that a fair share of the room arrives by tender.
Ten O'Clock, Not Eight
Ibiza eats late and does not apologise for it. Kitchens are still working at midnight in high season, and a table booked for eight puts you in an empty dining room being served by people who have not warmed up yet. Book for around ten and drink somewhere first.
This is why our dinner-date bookings rarely begin before nine. An evening that starts at eight has burned its first hour before the island is awake.
The View Is a Separate Purchase
Sa Punta looking back at Dalt Vila across the water, Cala Bonita down on the sand near Santa Eulària, Es Boldadó on the cliff above Cala d'Hort with Es Vedrà sitting out in front of it — these are view rooms, priced accordingly, and worth it on the one night the view is the entire point.
The better cooking is usually ten minutes inland and roughly half the money. Casa Maca on the hill above town, La Paloma up at Sant Llorenç, the village bars in Santa Gertrudis and Sant Josep where local families actually eat. If you are here a week, spend one night on a view and the rest inland.
Some Rooms Are Nightlife Wearing a Menu
Lío by the marina, Nobu out at Talamanca, Zela and Cipriani near the port: dinner with production attached. They are good at what they do, but nobody has a quiet conversation in any of them. Lunch Is the Better Meal Here Anyway
The island's real strength is the long afternoon. Sa Trinxa at the far end of Ses Salines, Experimental Beach on the same stretch, Amante on the cliffs near Santa Eulària, and — if you have the day — Juan y Andrea on Formentera, half an hour by fast ferry from Ibiza Town. Getting the Table
For the names in August, ask two weeks out. In June or the second half of September a few days is usually enough. Phone rather than tap through a widget, give a real number of people, and turn up on time — reputation travels fast on an island this size.
