The big southern resorts are the easiest. Lobbies are busy at every hour, lifts are away from reception, and a guest crossing the floor at eleven at night is the least remarkable thing happening. Ten minutes from the airport as well, so timing is reliable — Playa d'en Bossa is our most straightforward area for this.

Small hotels in Ibiza Town work differently. Reception is one person who has seen everybody who came in that day, and inside Dalt Vila there is often no vehicle access at all, so the last stretch is on foot up a hill. Perfectly workable; just tell us it is one of those.

Then the north and the interior. Na Xamena, Portinatx, the agroturismos around Sant Llorenç and Santa Gertrudis — beautiful, private, and an hour from the airport down roads with no lighting. These need a confirmed address, more notice, and travel time built into the booking.

Less than clients expect, and the things it does notice are not the ones people worry about. Spanish hotels register overnight guests, so if she is staying until morning, some properties will want a document at some point. That is a formality and it is handled quietly.

What draws attention is behaviour rather than presence: someone waiting in a lobby for twenty minutes, a phone call to the front desk asking for a room number, or an arrival that is obviously being managed. We avoid all three by agreeing the room number and the exact time in advance, so she walks in and goes straight up.

We do not contact your hotel. Not the concierge, not the desk, nobody — unless you specifically ask us to arrange something with them.

A rented finca has no reception and therefore no discretion problem, which is why a lot of longer bookings happen at villas. What it does have is staff. Housekeepers arrive early, pool maintenance turns up unannounced, and a chef or a driver may be part of the package.

So we plan around people rather than around a front desk: who is on the property and when, where the gate code comes from, and whether the road is one a taxi will actually attempt at two in the morning. Half the villas on this island are down an unmarked dirt track. Send a pin, not a description.

Ibiza runs late, which affects even a booking that never leaves the room. Restaurants are still full at midnight, roads are busiest around one and again at six, and a companion finishing a booking at three in Santa Eulària is not going to find a taxi standing outside.
