Every week we get the same planning question: should I do Ibiza, Formentera, or both? The honest answer depends on the format of your trip — and for companion travel specifically, the differences matter more than they seem on Instagram.
The Personalities of Each Island
Ibiza is a social island. The energy is outward — beach clubs, dinner reservations, nightlife, yacht days, big crowds in August. The luxury infrastructure is built around being seen (or pretending not to be).
Formentera is a private island. Even with its tourist density, the structure of the island — sunset views, cliffside hotels, narrow paths — encourages quieter, romantic-format days. The energy is inward.
For companion bookings, the implication is clear: Ibiza suits the GFE-dinner-club-overnight flow naturally; Formentera suits the quiet-romantic-getaway flow.
Nightlife
Ibiza wins decisively. Formentera has a handful of beach bars and the legendary Tipic, but it's not in the same league as Pacha, Hï, or Amnesia. If a real night out matters, Ibiza is the answer.
For full Ibiza nightlife breakdowns see our nightlife guide and 2026 nightlife post.
Dining
Both islands have excellent food, but the style differs. Ibiza dining is loud and social — long tables, music, beach-club lunches. Formentera dining is intimate and barefoot — quiet beach shacks like Juan y Andrea, fresh fish on the sand, sunset wine pairings.
For dinner-date bookings specifically (see our dinner date service), Ibiza has the wider range; Formentera has the more romantic individual restaurants.
Privacy
Formentera surprisingly wins. Its agroturismo hotels and beach villas are private by design — low-rise, spread out, no overlooking neighbours. Ibiza hotels are more variable — Eivissa and Cala Jondal hotels are intimate but more public; Talamanca and Es Vedrà villas (see our villa service) match Formentera's privacy easily.
Logistics
Ibiza has the airport, better infrastructure, and easier movement around the island. Formentera has no airport — you reach it only by ferry from Ibiza — and its single coastal road can be slow in peak August.

The Combined Trip
The best of both worlds is genuinely the combined Ibiza-Formentera trip — 3 nights Ibiza for social energy, 2 nights Formentera for the quieter close. Ferries between the islands are roughly 2 hours and run multiple times daily. A yacht day between the two (Balearic Islands cruise) is another excellent option — see our yacht day service.
Our concierge handles the full logistics for combined trips frequently.
